Profile

The Department of Chemical Engineering commenced its operations from June 1995. First priority was given to the development of various laboratories in such a way that each laboratory was functional at least one semester prior to the use by students. Such an approach was helpful to prepare the department to cater to the visits of inspection teams from AICTE, DTE and University of Madras periodically. The major laboratories developed are Physical Chemistry laboratory, Technical & Instrumental Analysis laboratory, Chemical Reaction Engineering laboratory, Mass Transfer laboratory and Mechanical Operations laboratory. Development of teaching staff from June 1995 to December 2001 was with an increase in intake of 3 to 9, with a permitted student intake of 40 (With 10% increase through Lateral Entry). The Department has graduated 132 B.Tech Chemical Engineering Graduates in 3 batches. Some of the graduates are involved to do M.S. or M.B.A in India and abroad. Others are working as process engineers in Chemical Plants, joined family business ventures or entered software qualifying areas.

Faculty

Presently the department conducts even semester classes (Dec 2001 to April 2002) for II B.Tech / Semester 4 with 35 students, III B.Tech / Semester 6 with 37 students and IV B.Tech / Semester 8 with 44 students. The existing staff are adequate to satisfy the required staff to student ratio. The Department of Chemical Engineering consists of well-qualified and experienced teaching staff with background from Anna University (Chennai), IIT, Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Annamalai University and Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore.

The non-teaching staff of the department have sufficient industrial experience before joining this department.They are continuously trained within the departmental labs to handle various equipment.

Activities

RESEARCH PROGRAMMES

All the teaching staff has registered as members of ISTE which trains its participants in short term courses, summer school projects and research programmes in several institutions. Some of the existing staff are being considered to Ph.D on part time basis for future development. Also staff members are encouraged to attend seminars and conferences in order to gain insight on their areas of specializations.
