3.3 Innovation Ecosystem

3.3.1 Institution has created an ecosystem for innovations and entrepreneurship with an Incubation
centre, entrepreneurship cell

Response:

Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute has significant contribution and commitment in creating the
innovation ecosystem by following framework. We have acknowledged NISP (National Innovation and
Start-up Policy) framework and framed Institutional Start-up policy (MGR ISP) as a first step in creating a
foundation for innovation. Followed by implementing the policy our institute has a strong track record in
IIC (Institution Innovation Council) Activities. Dr MGR IIC (Institutional Innovation Council) was
established in the 1st Cohort of IIC among HEI’s in India by 2018 to impart Innovation and
Entrepreneurship spirit among students and faculty. Dr MGR 2 IIC was awarded 4 star rating in 2018 –
2019 and 4.5 star rating for the year 2019 – 2020 and 4 star rating in 2020 – 2021 for efficiently
participating in MIC driven activities, Self-driven activities related to innovation, entrepreneurship and
IPR. Dr. MGR IIC initiates active participation of students and faculty in Workshops, Seminars,
Competitions/MGR Online Hackathons, Industry Visits, Internship/Training – Startup/Project Related/IPR
based, Demo Day – For Incubatees and Project Students. Our University participation in ARIIA ranking
completely reoriented the mind-set and built an ecosystem to encourage high quality research, innovation
and entrepreneurship. More than quantity, we focused on the quality of innovations and will try to measure
the real impact created by these innovations nationally and internationally. The best outcome reached so far
in Top 18 Institution in India ARIIA (Atal Ranking for Institutional Achievements) ranking. Innovative
interdisciplinary prototypes funded by DST New Generation Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Development Centre (NewGen IEDC) a program launched by National Science and Technology
Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB), Government of India. Dr MGR DST NewGen IEDC
inculcated the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship amongst the students and the faculty. NewGen
IEDC also encouraged and supported start-up creation through guidance, mentorship and support for our
students across all disciplines. Students/Incubatees are encouraged to take up innovative projects with a
scope for commercialization. We have developed 45 plus Proof of Concepts and Pre-Incubation from the
academic year 2018 – 2021. Our incubation centre also incubated 19 Start-up Companies. We are
committed to create an innovative ecosystem.
