The Final year students of the Faculty of Hotel Management & Catering Technology, Dr.MGR Educational & Research Institute UNIVERSITY were taken on a Study trip to Dakshinachitra (Picture of South) – a living-history museum located on the East Coast Road, Muttukkadu, Chennai. The outing to this important location was planned as a “Destination Learning”. The museum is 20 years old and is dedicated to South Indian heritage and culture. Located 25 kilometres to the south of Chennai, Dakshinachitra attracts history loving people from different parts of the state and even from outside it. The museum was founded and is being managed by the Madras Craft Foundation (MCF). There are 14 houses in the museum which comprise exhibits for viewing relevant to Heritage and culture of South India.
Ms.J. Ishwarya, Assistant Professor held a Lecture session at the destination during the visit at the Museum location. Mr. Chander Raj K, Assistant Professor, who also escorted the students for the trip helped students understand & appreciate the historical antiques. The visit arranged, as a part of the subject – Tourism & Travel Management, could provide good scope for Learning about the south Indian heritage and culture. Handlooms, Handicrafts, Artifacts & Cultural and traditional practices were there for viewing and experiencing.
The visit enabled theoretical learning of the subject specifics which would account for 10 marks. The students also would get credits that help them fare better in the subject in the final assessment of their degree Exam. Post visit, Students were to submit their Project report narrating about the visit, the exhibits viewed and what they learnt. There was also a mapping exercise to be done by the students by marking the Cultural and heritage sites in India. The students enjoyed the trip and more at destination learning site – Dakshinachitra which made them engrossed in the tour based learning.
