Introduction

Faculty of Nursing has crossed a decade of existence since its inception in 2005. The faculty started offering undergraduate program in 2005, post graduate program from 2014. We offer Doctoral program also. All the courses are recognized by the INC and Tamilnadu Nurses and Midwives Council and affiliated to the Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute, Deemed to be University.

Program Objectives

On completion of the four years B.Sc Nursing Programme the graduates will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge from physical, biological and behavioral sciences, medicine including alternative systems and nursing in providing nursing care to individuals, families and communities.
  • Demonstrate understanding of life style and other factors, which affect health of individuals and groups.
  • Provide nursing care based on steps of nursing process in collaboration with the individuals and groups.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skill in making decisions in all situations in order to provide quality care
  • Utilize the latest trends and technology in providing health care
  • Provide promotive, preventive and restorative health services in line with the national health policies and programmes
  • Practice within the framework of code of ethics and professional conduct and acceptable standards of practice within the legal boundaries.
  • Communicate effectively with individuals and groups, and members of the health team in order to promote effective interpersonal relationship and teamwork

Nursing Foundations Laboratory
Our Nursing Foundation lab enables the students to gain adequate knowledge regarding basic procedures through which the firm foundations of the fundamentals in nursing is laid down.

The lab is well equipped and well ventilated with all the necessary equipments as per the INC requirements like patient cots, mattresses, bed sheets, bedside lockers, all types of linens and blankets, napkins and towels. Devices to provide comfort such as bed cradle, cardiac table and back rest are made available.

The lab is also equipped with wheel chair and stretcher in order to practice shifting and transferring patients. The lab is also equipped with Unisex multi function Adult mannequins, simulators for Venepuncture and urinary catheterisation, Adult Full Body and TORSO CPR Mannequins, Compression only CPR mannequins. Students are taught the basic procedures and allowed to practice before it is actually performed on patients in the real clinical setting.

All basic procedures like meeting nutritional needs, elimination needs, Administration of various types of medications, ostomy care, simple suturing techniques and bandaging are demonstrated on Unisex Adult mannequins.

Advanced Nursing Skills Laboratory
Advanced Nursing skills lab provides an environment for the undergraduate and post graduate students to master the skills in advanced clinical procedures. The Lab is well furnished with an ICU environment with advanced electronic full body CPR mannequin, O2 cylinder flow meter, and Suction apparatus, different sizes procedure trays, and all surgical instruments.




Community Health Nursing Laboratory
The aim of Community Health Nursing is to prepare students to render comprehensive care to the individual, family, and community and to develop an understanding of rural and urban community health management.

Community Health Nursing Laboratory is well equipped to enhance students to provide Comprehensive care to the Community. The lab consists of the all equipment for providing the basic care in term of primary health care like community bag, models, puppets and others thereby help our students to face any challenges in the community.


Maternal and Child Health Laboratory
The Maternal and Child Health Lab is well equipped with Birthing Simulator with CPR , Pelvis, Fetal Skull, Various Obstetrical Instruments, different kinds of Models etc. in addition to labour board , adult and paediatric cots. This lab also has neonatal CPR mannequin, baby and pediatric mannequin which provides firsthand experience to handle neonates and children. The lab provides students with a realistic, simulated clinical environment to practice and demonstrate competency in skills related to Obstetrics and Paediatric.


 
Nutrition Lab
Nutrition is a subject designed to assist nursing students to acquire knowledge on nutrition for maintenance of optimum health at different stages of life and its application for practice of nutrition.

Our Nutrition lab is well ventilated and well furnished.The lab is well established with all facilities for the preparation of different food items. The equipment include like refrigerators, mixture, dinner set, cooking vessels, automated weighing machine, stoves , gas cylinders and microwave oven. Nutrition Practical orients the student to cookery rules, preservation of food, and preparation of balanced / therapeutic diet for different categories of people.
Computer Lab
The Computer lab is equipped with more than 25 personal computing work stations with Microsoft windows and office 2016 applications in order to prepare and develop students for Global Competence. All the Computers are connected with LAN and internet services. The students can access to e books in all subjects. This innovative technological lab aids the Nursing students to gain knowledge and provide quick access to information.

Facilities

Infrastructure and Learning Resources

The faculty is within the A.C.S. Medical College and Hospital campus, which is a constituent unit of this University. The class rooms are well equipped with adequate ventilation and lighting.

A well equipped library with good collection of books and journals is available which functions from 08.00 A.M to 08.00 P.M. Spacious Reading Hall, Reference Section, Computers with Wifi access and photocopying facility make learning more conducive.


Clinical /Community Posting

In order to develop hands on skill students are posted in the Parent Hospital. Clinical Tie up is also obtained from speciality hospitals like Kanchi Kama Koti Child Trust Hospital, Institute of Mental Health (IMH) ,Corporation Health Posts.

For Community Health Nursing students are posted in Community areas of our parent hospital, Nazrathpet and Adayalam pattu .

The college has well equipped labs as per INC norms in order to demonstrate procedures to the students.

Attendance

A minimum of 80% attendance in theory and practical in each subject is required to appear for the university examination.

However a candidate must have 100% attendance in each of the practical areas before the award of degree.

Examination

  • The Candidates appear for theory and practical examination conducted by Dr. M.G.R University at the end of each academic year.
  • Internal assessments make up 25% of total university marks.
  • A candidate should have cleared all the subjects in first, second and third year before appearing for the final year examination.

As part of Extension services our faculty conducts health awareness programs in and around the campuses. Students participate in Health camps organized by our parent Hospital.
