Introduction

The Department of Information Technology was started in the year 2001 and offers B.Tech, M.tech and PhD programs. In this era of digital world, the IT department offers an excellent atmosphere for students to learn and acquire the necessary skills as demanded by the industry.

The department is NBA accredited and is enriched with experienced faculty members, well equipped laboratories, department library and R&D facilities. Students and faculty members are a part of professional societies like IEEE, IETE, CSI, CISCO etc., in order to gain contemporary knowledge about the happenings in the industry. The Department has established strong links with industrial and academic experts, both within and outside the country. Besides high quality teaching, various webinars, FDPs, conferences, symposiums and workshops are organized frequently both in the national and international level.

Our department faculty members have a remarkable number of publications. Our enthusiastic students take up several real time projects each year. Also, the aspiring students are given international opportunities through student exchange programs, internships and summer training programs. Students those who graduated in our department are placed as system developers, architects, technical leaders and managers in many multi-national companies. Above all, the department of Information Technology strives for continuous improvement and setting a good example in the effective use of technology.

Welcome to the department of Information technology at Dr.M.G.R.Educational & Research Institute, Chennai. In this era of digital world, the IT department offers an excellent atmosphere for students to learn and acquire the necessary skills as demanded by the industry in a state of the art facility and highly qualified faculty. The department works with the objective of addressing critical challenges faced by the Industry, society and the academia.

Perhaps our department is enriched with experienced faculty members, well equipped laboratories, department library and R&D facilities, for helping our students to learn, grow, develop, and achieve their goals in their professional career. Department of Information Technology is one of the largest departments in Dr.M.G.R.Educational & Research Institute With nearly 15 faculty members and 350 undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students. The department’s graduate programs continue to draw from a very strong application pool. The Information Technology department was established in the year 2001. The department offers undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral programmes in the key areas of Information Technology.

Sridhar Vembu Journal Club
The department has formed this Journal Club inspired by the founder and CEO of Zoho Corporation Mr. Sridhar Vembu. This club encourages Faculty and Student to think critically and come up with novel ideas. It is a platform to discuss and share research experiences among faculties, research scholars and students. Journal Club meetings are conducted every quarter to discuss about the progress of research activities, share about current research areas and publication challenges.

  • Our department student Mr.Sharvathan won Special Prize in the Sangamam'24 event at Chengaltpet Medical College, Thamizhmandram on 22 June 2024. 
  • Our third-year student, Satish Kumar.S participated and won in the All India Inter University Karate Tournament, which took place in Kurukshetra from March 14–17, 2022.
  • Sarvathan, one of our third-year students, participated and won in mono acting event organized by Chennai Medical College .


Associations & Activities
Department Association - AITZa
Association of Information Technovanza, AITZa was formed in the year 2019. The association was formed by students from all the years and they hold different roles as office bearers. Office bearers are compiled every year adding the new students
to the existing team.

Association Of Information Technovanza (AITZa) was formed for the benefit of students by organizing plenty of events every semester to make them aware of latest trends in the Information Technology field. It Provides platform where they gain knowledge and share knowledge on current trends in Information Technology. The students gain awareness of the evolving technologies by organizing Seminars, Workshops & Guest Lecturers. By involving in such activities, the students enhance their presentation skills, organizational skills, Team work and leadership
qualities. These qualities will convert them industry ready when they pass out of the college.

AITZa work tirelessly with the contribution of the office bearers to accomplish enormous variety of events throughout the year.

  • Diminishing the theory-heavy classes to practical approach and motivate students to work on mini projects on the current topics used in industry.
  • Revising the curriculum to bridge the gap between industry and academia in accordance to the industry standards.
  • Improve students' interaction with industry experts and academic experts who are invited as guest speakers has also prove to be extremely beneficial for everyone.
  • Through the entrepreneur development cell the students are encouraged to initiate a startup business, work on communication skills, leadership qualities, and continuous learning.

Department Newsletter

The department newsletter published under the title 'TECH VOICE' is being circulated quarterly every year. The first issue was launched in March 2021.


TECHVOICE is edited and designed by the students. The newsletter includes articles related to latest trends in technology and other interesting IT facts. Articles are also contributed by the students. This motivates them to keep themselves updated as well as brings out the creativity in them. The newsletter also reflects the achievements made by students and faculty members in both co-curricular activities and extra-curricular activities. The publications made by them are also listed. Based on their active contribution to the department, 1-2 student and faculty member are appreciated and highlighted in the newsletter as 'Stars of the month'.
