The Department of Mathematics came into existence purely as a service department when Dr.M.G.R. Engineering College was started in 1988 – affiliated to the University of Madras. It comes
In the year 2011, we started the M.Phil programs in the following areas: (i) Operations Research (ii) Industrial Mathematics and (iii) Stochastic processes. We started the undergraduate program B.Sc Mathematics and M.Sc Mathematics programs in the year 2013 and 2016 respectively. The courses offered by the department are unique in its own way. All the courses were designed to cater the requirements of the various departments. For example, the Numerical methods course for Mechanical Engineers, Mathematical foundations for Computer Science, Special functions for Chemical Engineers etc. The department has done several level bridge courses (for I year B.Tech students) based on the demand and requirement. The department has conducted remedial classes too.
It is one of the departments that is pursuing in the direction of research. 25 % of the Faculty members are Ph.D. holders (From Anna University, IIT), 25% are pursuing their Ph.D. and 25% will be registering for Ph.D. in the next academic year positively. We are offering Ph.D programmes in several areas both in pure and applied Mathematics.
Try to move on to the next level of creating E-learning resources with the coordination of Dr. M. G. R Digital learning Monitoring cell of our Institution
The Department of Mathematics aspires to the highest standards of excellence in Teaching and Service. The Faculty as well as the Students, to be active Critical thinkers and Problem solvers that contribute positively to the world in which we live and learn.
The Department of Mathematics is committed to Quality through Teaching, Research

The Department of Mathematics started a Mathematics association namely, PlanetM on 8th February 2012 with the objective, To serve the Students, Faculties and Research scholars of our university and other institutions by way of helping them to understand / model / solve the Engineering / Life science problems through Mathematical modeling and techniques.
Through this, we initiate to do some of the following activities:
v To create awareness about the enormous applications of Mathematical techniques in the field of Engineering, Medicine etc., through seminars and workshops.
v Providing service to the Research scholars by way of sharing the Mathematical ideas in their field of research.
v Providing service / help to the Under-graduate and Post-graduate students in their Projects / Competitive exams(GATE etc.,) relating Mathematical aspects.
v Conducting weekly / monthly online quizzes.
v Managing Tie-ups with other associations of our university and other institutions to provide inter-disciplinary services.
v Providing awards and certificates to the people who are actively participating in the events of the math association.
The Department of Mathematics created a new web portal for the PLANETM Math Association on 19th July 2012. Here one can find a collection of Math articles, video lectures, links to useful Math websites, online Quizzes, links to free online Math Journals, Math softwares and so on.
In Particular for the benefit of the Students, we uploaded useful study materials, previous year question papers of GATE, CAT and other competitive examinations, placement question papers and so on.
