Introduction

In the year of 2014 Dr.MGR Educational & Research Institute – Deemed to be University stepped into the Media Training in a bigger way by starting Department of VisCom &Animation with B.Sc Animation and Visual Communication course ,one of its kind and loaded with high end infrastructure , and now, in a duration of5 years the Department has grown tremendously.

In the year 2018,the department started a unique,complete & comprehensive job oriented degree program - B.Sc. Advanced Animation which is offered only in our University.

With a tremendous Start In the year 2018 the department has launched a Post Graduate program with a combination of Animation and Visual Communication - M.sc Visual Communication and Animation.

The department is housed with Advanced Animation Laboratory, Clay modelling studio, Stop Motion Animation, Dubbing Studio, and Green Matte Studio,(where shoots for the TV channel happens here and students are allowed to be a part of the back end crew).

Vision

The department vision is to produce industry knowledge Media & Animation professionals who’ll bring fame and name to the media industry by their culture conscious skills.


Teaching Methodology

Students are given class room training along with modern teaching mechanism and apart from this our students are exposed to "Tech Talks"(Seminars, guest lectures and interactive sessions) conducted by Film, TV and Media Industry Professionals – averaging 10 sessions in a semester and regular workshops on latest technologies.

Salient Features

We organise internship for the students in the Film Industry since we are associated with the Film Director's Association, giving the student a real time experience to work with the world class professionals in the film industry.


Also internships in TV channel, Production House, Films, VFX Studios wherein students are allowed to get hands on experience on script writing, cinematography, Direction, Program production Animation and Television production.

The Renowned Actor and Director Dr. Pandiya Rajan, handles classes for the students on Short Film making & direction

  • International Internships - Our students visits International studios which is organised by the university , enhancing them to get world level exposure .

  • Tech talks is the most prominent feature of our department which is organised for every semester.

  • Department of Viscom and Animation has a fully functional Animation lab and Production Studio that is catering it's services to the industries for the past FIVE years.

  • The department focuses on the strengths and weakness of individual student and guide them accordingly.

  • Special and Unique methods adapted to teach non-artistic students to do good quality animation.

  • Outdoor visits and outdoor sketching for the students will be organised every semester for every year.

  • Acting Classes are Conducted by the professional from the acting school.

  • The students are exposed to wide variety of clay sculptingin Clay modelling Studio.

  • Regular TV shoots happens in our Studio where students are allowed to be a part of the crew.

B.Sc. Animation & Visual Communication

The Viscom & Animation Programme prepare the students to be able to do the following:

  • PO1: To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of media. Engage and utilize past and present theories and histories and mastery of relevant methodologies, skills and tools applied to a broad range of media.

B.Sc. Advanced Animation

  • The Animation and Graphic Lab engages in training the students in 2D Graphics, 3D Animation, Web Designing, VFX and Game Designing

  • Students have access to the best quality clay.

  • They are taught to make Live Models, mould and Casting too.


  • The Edit Suite is a room usually consist of workstations with one or two displays consisting Video editing software and hardware. The Edit suite in the department consists of workstation with Final Cut Pro and Avid Edit software for Video Editing. Dubbing studio is a specialized facility for sound recording, mixing and audio production of instrumental or vocal musical performances, spoken words.

  • It consists of a ‘Live Room’ attached with isolated ‘booth’ equipped with Mics, and 12 Channel Audio Mixer, controlled by the Sound Engineer with Pro Tools software in the control room.


  • This incorporates a green screen studio, a back porch for engaging, a private green room, and control room, Sound Suite.

  • Full versatile multi-camera HD video and sound generation vehicle for "live nourish" to vast screen projection which is ideal for shows.

         
         

iMAC Provides students with a plethora of tools for Animation. High end systems for Content Development, Cinematography and Video Editing are associated with this laboratory.


Equipped with integrated professional lighting system, semi-oval type backdrop for chroma, patch bay for video and audio connectors for microphones and latest video cameras.

Association:

Creozone is a guide to state student association to figure out and also enhance their creative skills, to share the student’s media knowledge. The primary objective of the Creozone is to enhance social, cultural, intellectual, recreational and campus governance involvement.


Activities:

We proudly say that the Department of Viscom and Animation collaborated with Asia University, Taiwan for the first time in the month of July 8th to 26th 2019 as Summer Internship Programme for the Designing course attended by four of our students which was the great benefit for them.
