Introduction
Mechanical Engineering Department is in operation since 1988, right from the inception of Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College, promoted by Tmt. Kannammal Educational Trust.
 
  • Our department made a humble beginning in 1988 with a Bachelor's programme with an in-take of 60 students.
  • The Department started M.Tech programme in Industrial Engineering and Design Engineering from the year 2002.
  • The department was accredited by NBA with B 3 grade in the year 2002.
  • The Institute acquired the Deemed University status in the year 2003.
  • The University accredited by NAAC with B+ grade in Feb2007.

  • Providing quality education through well structured curricula supplemented with practical training, guest lectures by eminent professionals, field visits to leading industries and also in-plant training.

  • Equipping the department with   contemporary infra-structure and the state of art R&D     centre to cater to the needs of research scholars and industries

Programme Outcomes (POs)
  • An ability to understand fundamental Mathematics, Basic sciences and adapt it into various Engineering applications.
  • An ability to understand the knowledge of heat energy dynamics and applications, heat transfer mechanism and fluid flow.
  • An ability to understand the mechanics of fluids and machineries.
  • An ability to design and synthesis of mechanisms, machine elements and structural members and import drafting skills with modern methods
  • An ability to understand the knowledge of the structure of machines, manufacturing process, properties and behavior of materials, and various testing methods.
  • An ability to understand the principles of various mathematical techniques like optimization techniques, numerical interpolation techniques, design of experiment techniques and statistics in quality aspects.
  • An ability to understand on multi-disciplinary events like electrical drives, electronics and microprocessor devices, Mechatronics, transducers and control theories.
  • An ability to design a system, components and process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, ethical and safety and create an opportunity to realize an industrial condition.
  • An ability to understand the computational complexity in various fields and use the modern computer tools.

A group of nine students Team "GARUDA" of III year Mechanical Engineering annual convention held at PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, during January 2008 had won FIRST Prize in Aero-modeling contest.

Our students have participated in the event from 2008 onwards.
  • In 2008, our Team stood 12th among all the teams in the Country.
  • In 2009 the team won the best award for outstanding efforts with a cash award of Rs.60,000.
  • In 2010 the team grabbed the RAFTAR AWARD & SPEED AWARD and a cash award of Rs. 2 lakhs.
  • Our team has been shortlisted for SUPRA SAE, formula race to be held in July 2011. The Race Car is designed and built by our Students.

Society of Mechanical Engineers

The society is functioning right from the inception of the university. It conducts a variety of activities for the benefit of the students and for updating the latest global developments in the industries and Research and development. The society is conducting YANTRAM students symposium every year.

Robotics Club

Our department in association with Lema Labs (Incubated by IIT Madras, Chennai) is setting up a robotics club at our University. Students of various disciplines have becomes members of this club. They will be trained for a period of one year at the end of which they will be awarded a Certificate after successful completion of the training and an examination.
