ABOUT US

The department of physical education commenced in the year 1988. The objective is to provide facilities related to playing and fitness. The department nurtures students with thorough knowledge in the theory and practical components with the view that they will serve the society independently and confidently as teachers, coaches and management specialists.

The department transformed gradually and in the year 2003 it started teaching "FITNESS AND HEALTH” as a three credit course for the I Year B.Tech students. The topics in the subject include "CONCEPT OF HEALTH”, "BODY RESPONSE TO EXERCISES”, "FOOD AND NUTRITION”, "SYSTEMS OF EXERCISES” and "YOGA”. Later in the year 2011, the subject was merged with Environmental Studies. The department’s faculty are vibrant and they taught environmental studies to first year B.Tech and to the students of Arts and Management Studies.

The department has been offering the course B.P.E.S. since 2018-2019. The department also offers Doctor of Philosophy courses from the year 2008 and three scholars were awarded Ph.D in the field of Physical Education and Sports.


DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS

  • The department is having highly qualified staff members in the field of Cricket, Football, Kabaddi, Volleyball and Athletics.
  • The department conducts selection trials to identify talented players during the months of August and September every year.
  • The selected players were trained, coached and sent for participation in the All India Inter University games and sports.
  • The prize winners and the participants are awarded with Form-III certificates which is very useful for the students to get appointments in Central and State Government jobs and uniformed service jobs.
  • With the objective of providing chances for mass participation, Inter Departmental Intramural Tournaments and Sports comprising of Engineering and Technology, Medicine, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Allied Health Sciences, Dental Medicine and Surgery, Architecture, Hotel Management and Catering Technology and Arts and Science Students are conducted every year during February and March.
  • The department provides opportunities for the students and the staff to participate in the open and invitational tournaments organised by reputed educational institutions.

FUTURE OUTLOOK

  • The Department envisages to start B.P.Ed and M.P.Ed
  • The Department has a master plan for constructing an indoor auditorium.
B.Sc. YOGA

Bachelors of Science in Yoga is a three year undergraduate programme. Yoga is a mental, spiritual and physical practice that helps one attain inner peace. It was developed in India over 5,000 years ago. It is becoming a practice globally for its benefits in physical and mental health. The course aims to promote the art of healthy lifestyle and a mode of profession to aspiring candidates. The curriculum focuses on the yoga benefits, learning of Asanas, meditation, Pranayamas and Kriyas. It provides theoretical as well practical understanding of physiological and psychological aspects of the subject.

Successful graduates can opt exciting career opportunities as yoga instructors, yoga researchers, personality trainers, yoga therapists, personality developers, Life skills trainers in hospitals, wellness centres and fitness clubs. Realising the holistic benefits of Yoga, more and more private companies, schools, hospitals, fitness centres etc. are hiring yoga instructors. Also, the Government aims at creating numerous vacancies for Yoga trainers in the coming years.

BPES

Candidate for admission to Bachelor of Physical Education & Sports (BPES) shall be required to have passed Higher Secondary or 10+2 or equivalent course conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu or any other equivalent system recognized by the State Boards of Education based on the admission criteria laid down by Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute are eligible to apply.

a) Other Requirements:

i. Candidate seeking admission to BPES must qualify the Physical Fitness Test (Appendix-I)

ii. Be free from Physical Deformities.

iii. Should be Medically Fit to undergo the course.

b) Preference will be given for the candidates who have represented in the game/Sports as specified in (Appendix-II)

ASSOCIATIONS & CLUBS

We have a Cricket Academy to cater to the Training needs of the interested cricketers in our Campus. In our Cricket Academy we have more than 100 members in the club.

They are trained by renowned coaches Mr.K.Senthil kumar and Mr.D.Chandru & Mr.T.Bharathi First division players in TNCA and assistant coaches are hired from outside on Saturdays and Sundays.

The training takes place in the specially created Nets. The members are provided with the playing equipments and accessories.

This programme gives a fillip for the best players to get selected for the University Cricket Team.


We have a Karate Association in our campus for training the students in the aspects of self defense and physical fitness.

We have 22 members in the club. Mr. Ravichandran, a black belt holder in Shito Ryu Karate is the chief coach and under him two paid trainers (one lady and one man) train the members three days in a week namely (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays). Periodically the members are tested for promotion to other Kyus according to their ability, performance and period of training.



Our Chess Association formed in the month of January 2015 gives more chances for our University chess players to take part in FIDE rated tournaments organized by various Universities and colleges. One of the active members, Mr. Ashit Kumar Jha along with his team of the members of the Association from EEE Department receives his Certificate from our President.

Mr.Neelakrishnan an alumini of our university as a coach cum trainer for the Archery club. Under his training many students have taken part in various competitions like AIU competitions, Student Olympics and secured many prizes and medals.



Mr.Gautham an alumini of our university is the trainer along with Dr. R.Vasudevan, Professor, Dept. of Phy. Edn. They manage the club with training, coaching and participation in all type of competitions. Periodically staff members are also involved in playing volleyball matches.




The Dr. MGR Basketball club is involved in selection, training and coaching of Basketball Players with the help of State level coaches and Mr. T. Bharathi, one of our staff.





Dr. Malathykumar is heading the activities of the Table Tennis Club. This alliance is for propagating the game through the students for identifying the potential and latent talents of the Table Tennis Men & Women Players.



This academy is spear heading towards popularizing this game to the international standard among the players of our university which is headed by Mr.S.Tubin a D-License Coach of Department of Physical Education and Sports.


Mr.D.Mathan Krishnan II Year B.P.E.S Student is secretary of this club and it promotes the interest of Body Building & Best Physique.



Dr.P.Muthukumar National Referee and Junior State Player from the Department of Physical Education and Sports is the convenor of this club assisted by Pro Kabaddi official Ms.S.Sowmiya from the same department.


To encourage the entire population of the university to know about the importance of proving their mettle in the field of Track and Field this academy was formed a long back. It is governed by Dr.S.Vairamani former athletics coach of SAI & Professor & Head, Department of Physical Education and Sports and assisted by Dr.M.Mahalingam, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Education and Sports.



International Day of Yoga is being conducted every year by the centre for yoga. All staff and students of our university actively take part and perform the asanas.






ACTIVITIES

On the auspicious occasion of the President's Birthday celebration, the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports has conducted the Kabaddi and Volleyball tournament for the school boys and girls at Main Campus on 05th July 2022. It was a Dawn to Dusk tournament. Totally 32 teams participated. 8 teams from each category for each game. Registrar, Senior Additional Registrar, Rector, Joint Registrars, and other executives inaugurated the tournament.
In the girls category,
Lady Sivasamy Girls Higher Secondary School secured the Winner and Velammal Matriculation School secured Runners in Volleyball
Government Higher Secondary School, Kannagi Nagar secured Winner and Annai Teresa Girls Higher Secondary School secured Runners in Kabaddi.
From the boys category,
Don Bosco Matriculation School secured Winner and St.Peter's Higher Secondary School secured Runners in Volleyball
Government Higher Secondary School, Virugambakkam secured Winner and Anjuham Higher Secondary School secured Runners in Kabaddi.
