One among the distinctive features of Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute, University is its hostels that stand tall and leave no stone unturned in providing a sense of homely feeling, comfort and security to all the inmates enrolled in its premises. Started in 1987 with separate constructions for Boys and Girls, and located in a serene atmosphere of the Institute's abode, the hostels have a lot to offer for its students who basically come from far off places to feel and call something their home. The facilities inside the hostels are of high stature and everything is planned and done keeping in mind the students stay is smooth with heaps of fond and cheerful memories to carry. The boy's hostel has four blocks and each block towers three floors with a total of 570 rooms owing to the majority of male students in the University and the girl's hostel towers a block with three floors and a total of 360 rooms. Considering safety of the students, hostels are strategically located within the campus. There is a separate hostel for students pursuing their MBBS at ACS Medical College and Hospital (ACSMCH) and Sri Lalithambigai Medical College and Hospital (SLMCH).

GENERAL FEATURES
The rooms have AC/Non AC facilities and the students are at liberty to opt according to their individual comfort and means. Three students can share a single room and the rooms are fully furnished with tables, chairs, cots, wardrobes, mosquito nets and an attached Bathroom/Toilet. There is no dearth of water supply in the hostel buildings and they are equipped with full time water and power supply. A full capacity generator is always kept handy in case of power shutdown in all the hostels. Drinking water is RO Treated and filtered with cool, medium and hot water types. There are experienced wardens on each floor who care and cater to every single need of students and see to it that they are comfortable throughout their stay in the hostel. Male and Female Security guards are also employed to keep a keen watch and provide round the clock attention on the hostel premises. There is a modern type kitchen with two dining halls that serve North Indian and South Indian type dishes as per daily menu. The dishes are cooked in a completely hygienic environment and care is taken to see that they are healthy and appetizing too. The entire campus is Wi-Fi enabled understanding the significance of technology on the world. This makes it easy for students to avail internet facilities for their study as well as for their overall career development. CCTV cameras are fitted all round the hostel buildings and strict discipline is being enforced.
I. ENABLING FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE
Visitors Lobby
A separate room called the Visitors Lobby is located near the entrance of the hostels to enable visitors visit the students and staff. Visitors are allowed inside only after thorough security check with complete details of the person they wish to visit. This enables safety of the residents inside the hostel premises.
Parents Room
Parents are allotted a separate room when they come to visit their wards in the hostels. This promotes healthy interaction between parents and their wards and also facilitates privacy.
Sickroom
Students who are unwell are treated with utmost care in the sickroom with a visiting doctor attending to them on daily basis. This helps students to recover quickly and attend to their studies without a break.
TV Room
Entertainment is one of the crucial factors in today's world of stress and tension. A television equipped with a DVD player is available in the premises to help students relax for a while after their monotonous hours of study.
II. KNOWLEDGE FACTORY
Internet Centre
Catering to the worldwide demand for knowledge and social expansion, an internet centre inside the hostel premises helps the students make the best use of the internet facilities both for their studies and their career.
General Library
The general library that stocks more than 2 lakhs books of various subjects is kept open upto 8 pm to help students of different branches to relentlessly pursue their studies.
Study Hall
A study hall is specially designed for group study and for the students to meet in one common place to clear their doubts with other inmates of the hostels. This not only improves studies but also helps build a healthy relationship among students.
III. PROMOTING FITNESS AND ACTIVE LIFESTYLE
Gym and Indoor Games
The Greek proverb says "A sound mind is in a sound body". Realizing the importance of a healthy body a Gym with Indoor Games facility is provided for improving the physical stamina of the students.
Playground
A beautiful playground adorns the hostel very near to the campus. Students can play Volley Ball, Badminton, Basket Ball, Cricket and all outdoor games to showcase their talents and love for sports.
Hospital
Students of University Main Hostel and Sri Lalithambigai Medical College and Hospital (SLMCH) Hostel can approach the Casualty department of the Sri Lalithambigai Medical College and Hospital (SLMCH) with highly qualified doctors and nurses who are available 24/7 at Adayalampattu. It is equipped with latest medical facilities and hi class equipment. Free medical aid is provided to all the hostel inmates and there is an ambulance too. A fully fledged ACSMCS (ACS Medical College and Hospital) that functions at Velappanchavadi also functions 24/7 and students are provided with health cards to avail services there too. This enables students to make use of combined facilities in emergency situations and also to stay healthy and fit.
IV. FOSTERING GOOD HEALTH AND SERVING DELICACIES
Mess
A mess catering to a wide platter of North and South Indian menu functions in the ground floor of the hostel premises. Keeping the health of students in mind the preparation is being undertaken in a highly hygienic environment with experienced caterers.
Snacks and Fresh Juice Bar
A shop that sells homemade snacks and fresh juices is enabled in the campus premises. Students can satisfy their taste buds eating delicious snacks and keep themselves healthy and active with fresh fruit juices.
V. MISCELLANEOUS SERVICES
House Keeping
Trained and experienced housekeeping staff are employed through contract to see that the hostel premises are always neat and tidy.
Transportation
Transportation facilities to ferry the students safely from one campus to another and to help in times of calamity is available all the 24 hours inside the campus with efficient drivers.
Office
To help in maintaining registers, accounts and circulation of information an office functions in the ground floor of the hostels.
General Stores
The General stores which stocks stationary, sanitary items and eatables functions everyday to help students meet their emergency demands.
Xerox Shop
A Xerox shop is facilitated for students for their basic needs such as taking printouts and it is also seen to be of great help at the time of submitting projects.
Saloon & Beauty Parlor
To maintain proper hygiene and to help beauty conscious students a saloon and beauty parlor are set up with hi tech equipment inside the premises.
Laundry Facility
For the benefit of saving students time a laundry facilities are enabled in the hostels that helps in maintaining neat and proper hygiene of clothes.
Power Room
The hostels are equipped with 24 hours electricity supply and the power room also has a built in generator with backup-500 KVA to assist during power shutdown.
Solar Power with Hot Water Bath
Solar power is enabled in the hostels and this helps in students getting hot water supply for bathing and other necessities.
RO and IR Treatment plant
Much importance is given to see that the water provided is free from germs and other dust particles. An RO and IR Treatment plant is set up inside the premises to see that the students get safe drinking water with hot, cold and medium types.
Sewage Treatment plant
Sewage treatment plant facility is set up inside the premises to avoid breeding of mosquitoes and water stagnation that give rise to many diseases. This enables a hygienic environment.
Courier and Parcel Services
Courier and Parcel services are enabled in the hostels to help students send and receive couriers and parcels. This is being done with utmost caution after thorough checking of the contents by the staff and security concerned.
Rain Water Harvesting
Rain water harvesting facility is empowered in the hostels in order to store water for future and to aid in multiple uses.
